Ten miles from Pemaquid Maine, the cliffs of Monhegan rise above the waves of the Atlantic.
The name likely derives from Monchiggon - Algonquian for "out-to-sea island." It was here at the island trading post where traders taught English to Samoset, the sagamore who in 1621 startled the Pilgrims by boldly walking into their new village at Plymouth and saying: "Welcome, Englishmen." More recently, the likes of Henri, Kent, Hopper and Wyeth have come here for inspiration. The image is rendered in what is best described as modern pictorialism.
Tom Camerons photography is a wonderful adventure that opens up the wild and secret places in our midst. Photos in the Farmington River gallery come directly from his time kayaking on and around that river.
